Typical food restaurants in Madrid

In the city of Madrid there is a great variety of restaurants, with food from all over the world. But today we will talk about some of the most emblematic places in the city, where you can enjoy the most typical food in Madrid.

Botín Restaurant:

Street de Cuchilleros, 17, 28005 Madrid.

This is the oldest restaurant in the world, located in the heart of Madrid de los Austrias. This restaurant dates back to 1725 and offers the best dishes of typical Castilian food. Among its most typical dishes are the suckling pig and roast lamb, which are cooked in a fabulous old wood-fired oven.

It preserves the format of an old inn and stands out for its hospitality, in a warm and friendly atmosphere, where you can enjoy recipes that have been passed down from father to son.

Casa Lucio:

Street Cava Baja, 35, 28005 Madrid.

One of the most recognised restaurants in the capital. Decorated like a 19th century tavern and with a bustling atmosphere, Casa Lucio embodies like few others the most traditional values of Madrid’s restaurants.

It star dish is the “huevos rotos con patatas” (eggs with potatoes, cured ham and potatoes), known all over the city. But it also stands out for dishes such as: the cocido madrileño and the excellent callos a la madrileña,  potato omelette with ratatouille, the famous Lucio potatoes and, for dessert, it’s delicious rice pudding.

Lucio’s son now run the business and three other restaurants have emerged from his hand: Viejo Madrid restaurant (Cava Baja, 32), El Landó (Plaza de Gabriel Miró, 8), and La Taberna de los Huevos de Lucio (Cava Baja, 30).

Street Espronceda 17 , 28003 Madrid

50 years ago, a married couple, Alfredo and María decided to open a small restaurant located in the Chamberí neighbourhood, they called it «Skylar» and started making omelettes. Nowadays,  it is possibly the restaurant that serves the best omelette in the city, that is why it is essential to stop to refuel and try their famous omelette.

In addition to their famous omelette, we also highlight other dishes on the menu such as: croquettes, squid in its ink, green salad with goat cheese and nuts, scrambled eggs with ratatouille and tuna belly, ham croquettes, ….. For dessert, we suggest the torrijas and tiramisu.

El Puchero:

Street Padre Damián, 37, 28036 Madrid.

El Puchero Restaurant was founded in 1940 as a small tavern. Here you can try dishes from the Mediterranean and Spanish cuisines. Many people visit it to taste its famous cocido (stew), famous throughout the city, its tender croquettes, and its fabulous Serrano ham. In addition to these, it also stands out for its famous desserts, such as fruit cake, a homemade cheesecake and a spectacular mille-feuille cake.

In it we can enjoy a fabulous meal, but also its decoration and atmosphere and of course its friendly service, it is an ideal place to visit if you want to try typical Madrid food.

Street  S. Jerónimo, 8, 28014 Madrid.

The closest you can get to travelling back in time to 19th century Madrid. Impossible not to imagine ghosts of the past peering into those Elizabethan mirrors. Lhardy’s cocido (stew) is as famous as its tripe, served in an unusual and luxurious way.

You can also opt for a lighter menu based on a traditional menu with classic preparations, where you will find partridge, croquettes, fish such as sole or meats such as sirloin wellington or steak tartar, without a doubt a must-visit place in our city.
